"The Piano Quintet attempts to sonically illustrate how Mexican music has evolved over time."
— Juan Pablo Contreras

Musas Mexicanas is a set of three musical portraits of Mexican muses who shaped the history of the country: “La Malinche” (c. 1502-1529), an Aztec slave who helped Cortés during the Spanish Conquest; “Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz” (1651-1695), a nun and poet who advocated for women’s rights in education; and “Frida Kahlo” (1907-1954), an artist who painted her pain and suffering with humor and candor. Each portrait (movement) traces their major life events and celebrates their legacy. Since these muses played vital roles in Mexico’s Prehispanic, Colonial, and Revolution periods, respectively, the Piano Quintet also attempts to sonically illustrate how Mexican music has evolved over time.
